Exercise : Human figure in the landscape

Well we are now midway through the summer holidays and I am starting to struggle to maintain momentum on working on my watercour assignment. Coupled with the new part time job I am finding the time available to study in peace is becoming increasingly difficult! I enjoyed starting thus exercise and completing a few sketches of family members though.

Exercise : Animals in the landscape

Another exercise where I surprised myself, perhaps stereotypically I thought I was "rubbish" at drawing animals, specifically horses, but there were some in a field next to our campsite so I dived in to have a try at sketching and painting them.

Here are my initial sketches:-

Side on the horses were relatively straightforward to draw, but once they turned into various semi turned away stances they became harder to capture, in particular their faces and jawbones.

I then worked on a fairly quick A3 landscape incorporating the horses. I really am finding that the process ofpractice  sketches really does set be up for a more successful painting, although I painted this landscape fairly quickly I was still referring back to my previous learning a including perspective, distance, trees and animals, I did not really need to consider the sky as my location and perspective was such that the trees covered that area of the scene.
